EDUCATION & OUTREACH
Director: Frank Hawkins
AIDS Delaware provides comprehensive HIV/AIDS education programs tailored to the needs of individual schools, houses of worship, businesses, organizations and community groups. We provide age appropriate programs for elementary school through university level youth and young adults.
The best way to stop HIV/AIDS is through effective education and prevention programs. Take the first step today. Contact us for professional training and outreach programs available at no charge to you.
Among the scheduled educational programs offered are:
- Do the Right Thing 4 Life (DTRT4L): for heterosexual African-American men and women of any HIV/AIDS status. Takes place in local barbershops and beauty salons. Call AIDS Delaware to see where the next program will take place.
- In Plain Language: for everyone of every race, sexuality and HIV/AIDS status. Learn how to be safe, learn how to make the right choices!
- Pa’lante Latino: for Latino men of any sexuality who have been diagnosed HIV positive. Learn how to live with this diagnosis in a life-affirming way.
- You’re Not Alone (YNA): for teens of all races and backgrounds who are learning about or questioning their sexuality. YNA is a safe space for LGBT youth to meet and gain assistance in developing a positive identity. Click here for more information (Link to YNA) or download a brochure here.
- Other Opportunities: Businesses, schools, houses of worship, community centers and civic groups, we can provide up to date information and education through presentations tailored to your needs and population(s). From teens to people in their 50s and 60s (a rapidly growing newer group!), our staff is able to make the message of HIV/AIDS education relevant and understandable. Call us for details!
Our Outreach Programs take place with many communities and populations. Among the most well-known are:
- Project PACT (Peers Achieving Change Together): Many Voices, One Path.
PACT envisions a community where youth of different backgrounds, beliefs and experiences work together and share responsibility for improving their own lives and the lives of those around them. We seek a future where Delaware youth have the space to expand their creative voices to express themselves, understand one another, and affect change in today’s society. PACT uses the gifts of dance, rap, poetry and theater to bring a message of HIV/AIDS education to students and youth at local schools and community centers. The materials are written by the group’s members and performed by them, developing leadership and peer educational skills as well as gaining professional development in the fine arts. Click here to learn more about PACT or click here to download a brochure about the program.
- AGE 50+ AND HIV/AIDS:
HIV and AIDS is making inroads into the age 50+ suburban community at alarming speed. New infections in this age group are increasing approximately 16% every year. Click here to learn more about AIDS in people over 50 years old. Contact us to arrange a speaker for your civic association, faith community, club or social group.
